ChatGPT is not replacing software engineers anytime soon

The hype around ChatGPT AI is real. We see random people on the internet creating crazy stuff with simple conversations. It almost seems like anyone out there is churning out code, images, full products, etc.

But is that true? who is actually tinkering with these tools?

The early adopters and creators are still the very people that were supposed to be replaced.

I haven’t yet seen a doctor with zero programming knowledge creating an app, or a sales professional creating a book about nuclear energy with these tools.

Yes. Anyone can create trivial things with these tools and answer common questions, but the expert creations and complex outputs, which are truly valuable in society are still created by the proverbial expert

Who will create the final and complex products with AI?

The truth is, ChatGPT is just aiding and helping the experts which already have the knowledge to create complex products.

The software architect and senior developer just got a powerful tool in his arsenal to create an app or any other system.

On the other end, the junior developer still struggles to ask the right questions and to have the proper conversation with AI — she doesn’t know what to ask, or how to tweak the outputs.

We learned that to prompt correctly, we need to know a lot about a specific domain.

ChatGPT just raised the bar for the professionals, and it’s removing the trivial inputs-outputs from the value equation.

Often, asking a question is harder than answering one. Having a proper conversation about a specific topic is the hardest — as it’s a series of good questions.

Who will ask the right questions? Who will moderate the great conversations with AI? The experts.

So, keep learning and never stop. You are not being replaced anytime soon, as you are the only one able to ask the right questions.
